概説中国で一般的に食べられてきた食用ガエルのなかで最大のもの。
ウシガエルよりもトラフガエルのほうが味がよいといわれる。
中国で食用にされている動物の中には絶滅に瀕している希少の種も少なくない。
そのため中国は1988年に「野生動物保護法」を制定し、希少動物の保護に乗り出した。
中国で食されているトラフガエルも国家二級保護動物に指定され、ワシントン条約の保護対象にもなっている。
現在、中国国内の自然保護区は合計900カ所以上にもなっている。
しかし保護対象動物の密猟は相次ぎ、2001年に湖南省で起きた1400匹にものぼるトラフガエル違法販売事件に対しては懲役11年が言い渡された。		SummaryIt is the biggest species generally eaten as edible frog in China.
